Dr Om Prakash Singh

IN ENGLISH:-
Question-- Describe the Rajput policy of Aurangzeb and also discuss its impact on the Mughal Empire.
Or
Describe the Rajput policy of Aurangzeb. What were the results of his policy?
Answer---- Babur, Humayun, Akbar and Jahangir adopted the policy of liberality with the Rajputs. Akbar established a vast empire with the help of Rajputs. Jahangir followed the policy of his father. During the time of Shah Jahan, these relations had become somewhat bitter. But during the time of Aurangzeb, the Mughal-Rajput relations got worse. As soon as he ascended the throne, he completely changed the Rajput policy of his ancestors.
Changes in Rajput Policy---- The main reason for the change in Rajput policy of Aurangzeb was his policy of religious intolerance. Apart from this, he wanted to end the internal independence of the Rajput states and merge them completely into the Mughal Empire. As long as Raja Jai Singh and Maharaja Jaswant Singh were alive, he could not implement his policy, but after his death he adopted such a narrow policy towards Rajputs, due to which he had to fight with Rajputs. Due to this policy, he had to fight many struggles with Rajputs, which can be mentioned in the following way--
Struggle with Marwar---- Aurangzeb's eyes were fixed on Marwar for a long time. Maharaja Jaswant Singh died on 20 December 1678 in Jamrud (Afghanistan). In the absence of succession, Marwar was brought under the Khalsa, accusing it of being a huge debt of the Mughal Empire. Later, the widow of Jaswant Singh had a son, who was named Ajit Singh. Aurangzeb's condition was that if Ajit Singh accepted Islam, he would be recognized as the ruler of Marwar. But the Rajputs did not accept this. This led to the beginning of a 30-year war between the Rathores and the Mughals. Aurangzeb wanted to keep Jaswant Singh's son and his widow in his custody. But Rathor leader Durgadas somehow managed to come to Jodhpur with Ajit Singh and the widow of Jaswant Singh. The people of Marwar accepted Ajit Singh as their ruler. Angered by this, Aurangzeb sent his royal army to subdue the Rajputs. Aurangzeb himself camped in Ajmer. The Mughal army captured Jodhpur, the capital of Marwar, and destroyed many temples. Durgadas continued the struggle and the Rajputs were able to recover many of their lost territories. After the death of Aurangzeb, his successor Bahadur Shah recognized Ajit Singh as an independent ruler of Marwar. The Rajputs still praise Durgadas's courage and valor and say, "O mother, give birth to a son like Durgadas."
Conflict with Mewar--- Aurangzeb also fought with Rana Raj Singh, the ruler of Mewar. Aurangzeb asked him to pay Jizya tax. Raj Singh refused to pay the jizya tax and started preparing for the war. Aurangzeb ordered the invasion of Mewar under the leadership of Hasan Ali in 1679 AD. In this struggle, the soldiers of Durgadas and Rathore were also with the Rana, yet the Rana was defeated. Mewar came under the control of the Mughals. Prince Akbar was entrusted the rule there. But after some time Rana Raj Singh succeeded in defeating Akbar. After this Aurangzeb ordered his three sons Akbar, Azam and Muazzam to attack Mewar from three sides but they got only partial success.
Meanwhile, Akbar, Aurangzeb's son, revolted against his father under the guise of Durgadas and declared himself the emperor of India on 11 January 1681. At that time Aurangzeb did not have so many soldiers in Ajmer that he could punish the rebellious prince. But it was fortunate that due to the death of Rana Raj Singh, Akbar could not get the cooperation that he had expected in the rebellion. And Aurangzeb succeeded in separating Durgadas from Akbar with the help of diplomacy. In the absence of Rajput support, Akbar's supporters eventually joined the army of the Mughal emperor. Disappointed, Akbar with the help of Rajputs finally went to Shiva's son Shambhaji. After some time from here it went to Persia, where it died in 1704 AD.
After the death of Rana Raj Singh, Rana Jai Singh became the ruler of Mewar. A treaty was concluded between Jai Singh and Aurangzeb on 24 June 1681. Despite the treaty, the people of Mewar continued the struggle for the next 30 years. Aurangzeb went south with a huge army.
Consequences of Rajput Policy Aurangzeb's Rajput policy proved to be detrimental to the Mughal Empire. This policy had the following results which are as follows:-
(i) The Mughals did not get any support from the Rajputs. The Rajputs, who were the tributaries of the Mughal Empire during the time of Akbar, became the most powerful enemies during this period.
(ii) There was a lot of loss of life and property in these wars.
(iii) Prince Akbar revolted with the support of the Rajputs, which became a wicket problem for Aurangzeb.
(iv) Aurangzeb had to suffer a lot in South India due to the absence of Rajputs. Lenpool has rightly said that "Aurangzeb lost his right arm and had to fight with the enemies of the south."
(v) The weakness of the military power of the Mughals was revealed in fighting the Rajputs continuously. According to one writer, "The war for the independence of Marwar and the bravery of Durgadas made clear the weakening of Mughal power.
In conclusion, it can be said that Aurangzeb failed to bring Marwar and Mewar under his control. His Rajput policy proved to be extremely fatal for the empire. There was a huge loss of life and wealth in the wars and the emperor stopped getting the support of Rajputs. It also affected other Rajput states. The result was that at the time of his death the other kings of Rajasthan had also become independent. Aurangzeb's Rajput policy is considered to be a major reason for the decline of the Mughal Empire.
