Dr. Om Prakash Singh, Assistant Professor, Deptt of History, Government P.G CollegeThakurdwara, Moradabad (U.P) India.

Delhi Sultanate: Slave Dynasty --- * Qutubuddin Aibak *
The Sultans of the Delhi Sultanate from 1206 to 1290 were known as the Sultans of the Ghulam dynasty, whose founder was Qutbuddin Aibak. Although they did not belong to this lineage, they were all Turks and their lineages were different. At the same time he was the child of independent parents. Therefore, instead of calling these sultans the sultans of the slave dynasty, it is more appropriate to call them the early Ottoman sultans or the Mamluk sultans of Delhi.
Qutubuddin Aibak----- Qutubuddin Aibak ruled the Delhi Sultanate in the middle of 1206 AD to 1210 AD. Qutbuddin Aibak was the founder of the Das dynasty or the Slave dynasty. The literal meaning of Aibak is "lord of the moon". According to Minhaj-us-Siraj, Aibak had a broken finger, so he was called Aibak-e Shaal (Disabled Aibak). He was a Turk of the Aibak tribe. This tribe was famous for its beautiful men and women. His parents were residents of Turkistan. Parents were poor, so in childhood he was sold to Qazi Abdul Aziz Koki in Nishapur. The Qazi was known as Abu Hanifa II for his purity. Aibak used to read the Quran in a very melodious voice since childhood, due to which he became famous by the name of Quran-Khwan (Reciter of Quran). Later he was brought from Nishapur to Ghazni, where he was bought by Ghori. On the strength of his talent, dedication and honesty, Aibak soon gained Ghori's trust. Ghori promoted him to the rank of 'Malik' and later to "Amir-e-Akhoor" (head of the horse house). According to the author of Adab-ul-Harb, Fakhe Mudabbir, "In 1206 AD, when Muhammad was going back to Ghazni after suppressing Ghori Khokro, he formally granted the powers of Viceroy to Qutbuddin Aibak. He was promoted to the post of Malik and He was appointed 'Wali Ahad' (successor) of the Indian Empire." Khaliq Ahmed Nizami does not accept the claim of Qutubuddin Aibak being made 'Wali Ahad' right. But in fact Aibak is considered to be the founder of the Turkish state in India. Because, he kept the Turkish state of India from Central Asian politics and tried for its independent existence.
Aibak got his coronation done in June 1206, three months after Ghori's death in 1206 AD. He made Lahore his capital. Aibak did not assume the title of Sultan at the time of his accession. He was satisfied only with the titles of 'Malik' and 'Sipahsalar'. In 1208 AD, Sultan Ghiyasuddin Muhammad Ghori freed Qutbuddin Aibak from slavery and legally accepted the Sultan of Delhi. Aibak had sent Nizamuddin Ahmed to Firozkoh to get the Dasya Mukti Patra. On his report, Ghiyasuddin Mahmud, the Gor Sultan of Ghazni, had sent "Dasya Mukti Patra", Throne, Doorbash (two-headed royal punishment), Lal Chhatra (Sultan's emblem), Ensign and Nakkara in the hands of Hasan Nizami. First of all, it was he who decorated Aibak with the title of Sultan.
Due to his generosity, Qutbuddin Aibak used to donate so much that he was called "Lakhbakhsh" (giver of millions), Pilbakhsh (giver of elephants), and Hatim II etc. According to Firishta, "When the common man praised the limitless charity of a person, he called him Aibak of his time." Aibak had built a mosque named 'Quwwat-ul-Islam' in Delhi and 'Adhai Din Ja Jhopra' in Ajmer. He started the construction of Qutub Minar in Delhi, which was completed by Iltutmish. During the reign of Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq, its fourth storey was badly damaged, on which Firoz Shah Tughlaq built two floors in place of the fourth floor. In 1210, Aibak died while playing Chaugan (modern polo) in Lahore. He was buried in Lahore. According to Hasan Nizami, "The teachings of Islam were greatly propagated by the orders of Aibak and the sun of religion gave its reflection on the countries of India with the help of God's amber."
