Dr Om Prakash Singh
0 (Records of the western world) में मिलता है।
इसका अंग्रेजी अनुवाद जापानी विद्वान तक्कुसु ने "A record of the Buddhist Religion" नाम से किया है।
- Must Read It:-Evaluate the achievements of Harshavardhana.
Question:
-- Mention the sources of knowing the history of Harshavardhana.
Answer:
---
The rise of the Vardhana dynasty in the seventh century is an important event
in the history of North India. This dynasty holds an important place in Indian
history. In this dynasty there was the powerful emperor Harshavardhana, who
after the fall of the Guptas tried to establish political unity in North India
once again, by stopping the powers of decentralization for some time in North
India. Harshavardhana is praised by many as an empire builder, efficient
administrator, and patron of religion, education and literature. Harshavardhana
was undoubtedly one of the greatest emperors not only of his own dynasty but of
India.
To
know the history of Harshavardhana, we have the availability of both literary
and archaeological sources in abundance, which we can mention under the
following references-
(A)
Literary sources: --- Literary sources are an important means
to know the history of Harshavardhana. Under which native and foreign
literature can be kept. Inkel throws important light on the history of Harsha.
(1)
Indigenous literature: --- (i) Harshcharita: --
The "Harshacharita" of his court poet Vanabhatta is the most
important instrument in native literature. Vanabhatta has described in
rhetorical words the personality of Prabhakarvardhana, the birth of
Harshavardhana, his childhood, the marriage of Rajshree, the death of
Prabhakarvardvan, Rajyavardvan and Grihavarman, the accession of
Harshavardhana, the discovery of Rajyashree and other events. Harshacharita
also mentions the important states, administration, and religious tendencies of
Harsha. Many scholars consider the description of Vanabhatta to be far from the
truth, but being a contemporary of Harshavardhana, his description has a touch
of historicity along with ornamentation. The biggest weakness of this book is
the lack of chronology. Vanabhatta's other texts "Kadambari" and
"Parvatiparinay" are not of as much importance as
Harshacharita.
(ii)
Kadambari: --- This is also the composition of
Vanabhatta. It is a poetic book, but it throws special light on the religious
and social system of Harsh.
(iii)
Texts written by Harshavardhana: -- Harsha himself was his
own historian. He was a scholar and writer of a high order. He is counted among
the successful poets and playwrights. The famous texts of Harsha are Nagananda,
Priyadarsika and Ratnavali. Through them, there is ample light on the life of
the religious, social and royal palaces of Harsha.
(iv)
Aryamanjusrimulakalpa: --- This is a famous Buddhist text. It
was first published by Ganapatishastri in 1925 AD. It has 1000 verses. Under
which the history of ancient India from the seventh century BC to the eighth
century AD is described. This text of Mahayana Buddhism also gives important
help in knowing the history of Harsha.
(2)
Foreign literature/details of foreign travellers: ---
(i)
Travel details of Hiuen Tsang: ---- The travel details of
Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang are an important source to know the history of
Harshavardhana in foreign literature. Hiuen Tsang was a Buddhist monk. He came
to India to get the knowledge of Dharma. He reached here in 630 AD and stayed
here till 644 AD. He also met Harshavardhana. Regarding Harshavardhana, his
Digvijay, administration, religious policy are mentioned in his book C.U.K.
(Records of the western world). He composed this book in 646 AD after reaching
back to China. Later, on the basis of this travel account, Huili wrote a
biography of Hsuan Tsang. Although there is a repetition of many things
mentioned by Hiuen Tsang, but many new facts also come to light.
(ii)
Itsing: - This was another Chinese traveler, who lived in
India between 671 AD to 705 AD. He has also written his travel details. Their
travel details and other Chinese sources provide very important information not
only on the reign of Harshavardhana, but also on Indian history and culture of
the 7th century. It has been translated into English by the Japanese scholar
Takkusu under the name "A record of the Buddhist Religion".
(iii)
Alvaruni: -- He was a Muslim scholar. This Persian
scholar had accompanied him during the invasion of India by Mahmud Ghaznavi. He
was the first Muslim writer, who did a detailed study about the culture and
traditions of India. Which he described in his famous book "Tehqeeq-e-Hind".
This book also throws light on the history and culture of Harsh.
(B)
Archaeological sources:---- Apart from literary sources,
archaeological sources are also very important to know the history of
Harshavardhana, in which two important records of Harshavardhana (Baskheda
copper plate, Madhuban copper plate) Pulakeshin II's Aihole inscription, Mohra
etc. have been included, which are mentioned as follows-
(i)
Banskheda inscription: - This inscription has been found at
a place called Baskheda in Shahjahanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. On which the
date of Harsh Samvat 22 i.e. 628 AD is inscribed. It is known from this article
that Harsha had donated the village of Markatasagar mixed with the western
route of Angdeep subject under Ahichchhatra Mukti to Bhattabalchandra and
Bharadwaj Gotri Brahmins. From this the names of many states and officials of
Harsh's rule are known. Along with this, the information about the victory over
Devgupta of Malwa ruler by Rajyavardvan and his murder by the Gond king
Shashank is found in this inscription.
(ii)
Madhuban inscription: - This inscription has been received
from a place called Madhuban of Ghoshi tehsil of Mau district (Azamgarh) of
Uttar Pradesh. The language of this inscription is Sanskrit and the script is
Brahmi. The date of Harsh Samvat 25 i.e. 631 AD is mentioned in this copper
plate inscription. It mentions some important events and administrative system
of Harshavardhana's reign.
(iii)
Aihole inscription: --- The Aihole inscription of Chalukya
king Pulakeshin II also gives information about this dynasty. Whose date is
633-34 AD. It describes the war between Harsha and Pulakeshin II. In this,
Pulakeshin II is said to be the conqueror of Harsha. This victory is also
corroborated by the later Nirapan, Kurnool and Togarchedi inscriptions. This
inscription was composed by Ravikirti, the court poet of Pulakeshin.
Muhare(Seals):
---
The archaeologist Krishnadatta Bajpai has published a golden coin of Harsh, on
the face of which 'Parambhattarak Maharajadhiraj Sriharsha Dev' is inscribed.
And the figure of 'Uma Maheshwar' is inscribed on the reverse side.
Clay
pieces from Nalanda and copper pieces from Sonipat have been received from
Harsha's time. From the writings inscribed on them, the genealogy of Maharaja
Rajyavardhan I to Harshavardhana is found. The name Harshvardhan is inscribed
in the seals received from Sonipat.
On
the basis of the above details, it can be said that we have sufficient
resources to know the history of Harsha. On the basis of those resources,
knowledge of many important things is obtained about the reign of this great
emperor. But if seen, all these facts are not completely proved. Until and
unless authentic evidence is available about it by research, Harsha's history
cannot be called completely authentic. But on the basis of the available
evidence, it can be said that this great emperor must have had a glorious
history.
